When does COP31 start?

The UN climate conference is scheduled for November 9–20, 2026, at the Antalya Expo Center in Türkiye. The November 11–12 Antalya Leaders’ Summit falls within that window. Leaders can use those two days to announce their priorities, while negotiators continue working on conference decisions. The name COP31 refers to the 31st meeting of the parties to the UN climate convention. It is a different process from the biodiversity COP17 held in Armenia.

Why do Türkiye and Australia both have leadership roles?

Türkiye hosts the conference and nominated its environment minister Murat Kurum for the COP31 presidency. Under a joint arrangement, Australia’s Chris Bowen is designated to lead the negotiations. The two roles matter when reading coverage: hosting the summit and steering the negotiating text are separate responsibilities. The outcome depends on what participating governments agree to in Antalya.

Where does climate finance fit?

Reuters identifies finance and the shift away from fossil fuels as central issues ahead of the talks. The UN schedule lists a ministerial dialogue on climate finance for November 13. A finance story can refer to several different things. A grant for flood protection helps a community adapt to an existing risk. Funding to replace a high-emissions energy source helps reduce future emissions. When comparing figures, check what the money supports, whether it is a grant or a loan, and the period it covers. A headline total can combine very different commitments.

How to read an announcement from Antalya

Look for the document and who issued it. A negotiating draft shows language under discussion. An adopted decision records what the relevant body agreed. An initiative announced under the conference’s Action Agenda can bring together willing governments, cities or other partners around a project. Each kind of announcement answers a different question. For a funding pledge, look for who will provide the money, who can use it and when the funds will be available. Those details help you track whether a promise turns into a funded project after the conference.

What to check as the talks progress

Use the UNFCCC conference page for the calendar and official documents. The agenda can change during negotiations, so check the document status and date before sharing a claim that a deal has been reached. After the final session, compare the adopted text with the earlier draft and look for who must act next. As of November 7, this guide describes the scheduled meeting and the issues to watch.
