Samsung News Shutdown: December 21 Date, Widget Changes and Country Limits

Samsung News notices reported in India and South Korea set a December 21 shutdown. What changes for the widget, personal data and readers elsewhere?

The notice names a service and an exact time

Samsung News is scheduled to end on December 21, 2026, at 00:00 UTC, according to an October 26 in-app notice reproduced by SamMobile. Its report identifies notices in India and South Korea. We inspected the reproduced notice, including its English version, rather than relying only on a shutdown headline. Android Authority also reports the discontinuation. This concerns the Samsung News service; the notice does not announce the end of Galaxy phones or their operating system.

What happens to the widget

The English notice says the Samsung News widget will stop receiving content updates after the service ends and recommends removing it from the Home screen. A widget remaining visible is therefore not evidence that fresh stories are still arriving. Distinguish removing that shortcut from replacing the phone: the practical issue is how to reach current reporting once this particular feed stops updating. A publisher’s own website remains a separate destination from the feed that previously displayed its stories.

Country coverage needs careful wording

SamMobile explicitly says confirmation in other markets was still awaited in its October 29 report. The evidence checked here does not establish a complete worldwide shutdown list. Readers outside India and South Korea should check the notice inside their own Samsung News app before assuming the same regional schedule. A search trend in the United States measures interest there; it cannot establish that a US service notice exists. Nor does an English-language screenshot alone identify every country to which a policy applies.

The date means different local clock times

Midnight UTC on December 21 corresponds to 5 a.m. in Pakistan, 5:30 a.m. in India and 9 a.m. in South Korea on that same date. These are conversions of the notice’s timestamp, not separate rollout promises for those countries. In particular, the Pakistan conversion does not confirm Pakistan-specific availability or a local termination announcement.

What the notice says about personal information

The notice says information collected for Samsung News will be deleted without undue delay after termination, except where law requires retention for a specified period. That is a service-specific statement. It does not say that every record associated with a Samsung account disappears. Use the linked privacy notice for the service’s detailed terms. We have not accessed a customer account or verified deletion in practice.
